Name of position: Research Associate – Specialist for Remote Sensing and GIS-based analysis

Workpackage III (“Online Tool for Monitoring of Land Use and Water Efficiency”) of the regional research network ‘Central Asian Water’ (CAWa) with project partners in Germany and Central Asia is seeking a highly self-motivated, independently working, communicative and team-oriented fulltime (100%) research associate with technical expertise in the field of Remote Sensing (RS) and GIS, from April to December 2018. The main tasks of the successful candidate lie in the technical implementation of the validation component within the WUEMoCA tool (http://wuemoca.net/app/). The candidate will offered a comprehensive training in the sustainable tool operation and validation framework and techniques (preferentially April and May) at the Department of Remote Sensing in Würzburg (Germany). We offer to work in a strong international network with numerous organizations in research and practice.

The CAWa project has started in June 2008 and is a scientific-technical component of the German Water Initiative for Central Asia (“Berlin Process”), which is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (www.cawa-project.net).

Requested fields of research and main tasks:

  • Implementation of the WUEMoCA validation framework in South Kazakhstan by conducting field sampling campaigns (in cropgrowing season) and GIS-based analyses
  • Documentation and regular communication with Coordinator
  • Assistance in lectures focusing on RS, GIS, and web mapping by using WUEMoCA (at the CAWa summer school and CAWa seminars), support during the generation of materials & translation

Expected skills and competences:

  • Highquality graduation in geography, geoinformation or related fields,
  • Extended knowledge in RS and GIS with sound knowledge in geostatistical analyses and programming skills,
  • Willingness to conduct a field campaign in South Kazakhstan (four weeks)
  • Excellent English skills (both written and spoken) are mandatory
  • Professional and respectful behavior and attitude in a collaborative environment,

Contract’s conditions:

The successful candidate will receive a position for 6 months with additional resources for self-organized field campaigns. Prolongation of the position is possible. The successful candidate will be located at the German-Kazakh University (GKU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan, with access to office infrastructure. Salary is depending on qualifications and experience and according to local conditions.
