International Online Conference “The Silk Road of Knowledge: Science Meets Green Policy”

International Online Conference “The Silk Road of Knowledge: Science Meets Green Policy” was held on February 23 - 25, 2022. The conference was organized by German-Kazakh University (GKU) to provide innovative solutions for water management and related policy dialog in Central Asia.

Members of the CAWa-Green project contributed to the conference by chairing two sessions.

Prof. Dr. Christopher Conrad and Dr. Muhammad Usman co-chaired Session II: Satellite data and digitalization for optimizing water distribution in the Aral Sea. Keynote speeches were given by Mrs. Anna Innozemtseva on “Modeling tool to support more sustainable and long-term decision making”, Mr. Shamsiddin Qurbonov on "Digitalization of water resources in Uzbekistan: performed works and future plans", Dr. Maira Kussainova on  “The use of satellite images with remote sensing to assess the increased water use and intensification of agriculture in the drylands of the Syrdarya River Basin” and Prof. Dr. Christopher Conrad who talked about the Introduction to the WUEMoCA tool. Dr. Shavkat Kenjabaev from Scientific Information Centre of Interstate Commission for Water Cooperation (SIC-ICWC), Uzbekistan, presented a policy brief prepared by the co-chairs that was further discussed by Dr. Mirobit Mirdadayev from Kazakh Research Institute of Water Management, Kazakhstan, Anna Inozemtseva from USAID Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity, Almaty, Kazakhstan and Shamsiddin Qurbonov, Director of Information Analytical and Resource Center, Ministry of Water Resources, Uzbekistan. More than 50 participants followed the session and actively participated in the discussion.

Dr Abror Gaufrov, Dr Milena Latinovic and Dr Tilo Schöne co-chaired the Session III: Water Resources and Water Security in Central Asia. Two main speakers of this session were Prof. Stefanos Xenarios, from the Graduate School of Public Policy, Nazarbaev University, Kazakhstan, and Dr. Vadim Sokolov from the Project Implementation Agency of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (Agency GEF of IFAS).  Talks were followed with the presentation of the Policy Brief by Dr. Milena Latinovic. Discussants Dr. Djafar Niyazov from the Institute of Water Problems, Hydropower and Ecology, National Academy of Science, Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Mr. Serikzhan Atanov from UNESCO Cluster, Almaty, Kazakhstan, and Mr. Murat Suyunbaev, Institute of Water Problem and Hydropower, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan gave their views on the topic and policy brief contents. A lively discussion followed also from the audience that counted around 70 participants.
