Participation at the 28th Conference of Parties (COP 28) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Dubai, UAE.

GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ Potsdam) delegate Dr. Abror Gafurov attended COP 28 from December 2 to 9, 2023, in Dubai and presented activities related to climate change and water resources in Central Asia.

 

. The visit to COP28 happened within the framework of the Green Central Asia program, where GFZ Potsdam is an implementation partner. Dr. Gafurov was invited to speak at sessions such as “Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy in Central Asia” organized by GIZ and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), “Monitoring climate change impacts on Central Asia’s cryosphere: cooperation, research and technology for improved climate change adaptation and resilience” organized by GIZ on behalf of Federal Foreign Office (AA), “Assessing and Addressing Climate Change Impacts in Central Asia: Challenges and Solutions” organized by German Kazakh University in the frame of the Green Central Asia program, and “Climate Change: Science lead Policy” organized by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Moreover, the activities of GFZ Potsdam in the frame of the Green Central Asia program were presented in relevant pavilions of Central Asian countries and beyond. 

The invitation and registration at COP28 for Dr. Abror Gafurov were assured by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), which is highly appreciated by GFZ Potsdam. Further networking and discussion of innovative project ideas were carried out with several partner institutes during the visit to COP28.
